Issue 7 of ERD News takes you around the world – stopping off in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital – to bring you news of the 2010 European Report on Development’s ‘roadshow’. Towards the 3rd ERD
By 2030, demand for food, energy and water is expected to rise by some 30-40%. Population growth, together with a growing middle class in emerging and developing nations, will put worldwide food production and security under extreme pressure. In the context of increasing resource scarcity and climate change, effective natural resource management is ripe for a major development policy discussion, especially in the run-up to the 2012 Rio+20 Conference. The European Report on Development 2011/2012 – which deals with Effective natural resource management for inclusive and sustainable growth in the context of increased scarcity and climate change: what role for the public and private sector?– tackles this hot topic head on.

The ERD team, led by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), in partnership with the German Development Institute (DIE-GDI) and the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM), unveiled a draft outline of the Report on 6 April in Brussels:

ERD 2010 roadshow roll-out

In parallel to the preparations for the ERD 2011/2012, the ERD 2010 roadshow has continued at full speed. A number of events have been held in Europe, Africa and elsewhere around the world. Here is just a sample:

The ERD 2010 in Nairobi: Social protection for developing countries, too
Described as the “missing piece” in the development puzzle, social protection is a much-needed instrument for inclusive growth and social development in the world’s poorer nations. This was the general consensus of delegates, including the 2010 ERD team leader Giorgia Giovannetti, attending a special workshop focusing on how workers in the large informal sector in Africa can gain access to social protection initiatives. An ERD reporter was also on hand at the Nairobi, Kenya workshop in March 2011, and filed this report:
